Pressing Passage from Monster...

The mayor of the city is addressing the city via news cast and he says this:

"The idea that we're just trying to stop crime in white or middle-class areas is nonsense.  Everyone living in the city deserves the same protection." (pg. 123)


This passage opens up a lot of different thoughts.  What is this passage implying?  One possible interpretation of this could be that police are not just and in fact, are racist.  They target people in poverty and seem to often get away with things that other people don't.  

This could be brought into the classroom in many ways.  For example, in  Milwaukee, WI a police officer got charged with illegally strip searching people and only got sentenced to 20 days in jail!  Would it be this way had it not been a cop that illegally searched someone?
